Social Action
The Temple Sinai Social Action committee is committed to putting into practice the principle of tikkun olam, the repair of the world. Recent projects include:
- School supplies for HAWC (Healing Abuse, Working for Change) – helping to fill the year-round need for backpacks and school supplies for children who flee their homes due to domestic violence
- Boxes on the Bima – collecting cereal boxes for the Marblehead and Jewish Family Service Food Pantries in honor of Shavuot, the Jewish holiday associated with the grain harvest
- Passover food – providing kosher for Passover food for the 26 client families of the JFS Food Pantry
- Films with social action themes such as “Wrong Side of the Bus”, about the Jewish response to apartheid in South Africa
- Shalach manot – preparing baskets of food and treats for congregation members who are students on college campuses
- Winter clothing drives for area homeless shelters
- Dinner at homeless shelters – preparing and serving meals are area homeless shelters
- Mobile phones - collecting mobile phones for use by women at risk of domestic violence
- Speakers on social action issues such as the Save Darfur Coalition of the Jewish World Watch
- JFS Food Pantry – sorting and delivering food to client families
- Babysitting nights – proceeds have been used for causes such as hurricane relief and a gemilut chasadim fund
- North Shore Coalition for Literacy – reading, writing, and talking with children whose literacy skills need extra attention and encouragement
- Anti-slavery campaign
