Class Information

In Judaism, the Torah is called the Tree of Life, because learning allows us to continue to grow as human beings by challenging us intellectually, emotionally and spiritually.  Education and study have always been a core value of Temple Sinai. Come join us to learn!

Returning to The Source: An Intellectual, Artistic and Experiential Journey into The Foundations of Hasidism – December 1, 8 & 15

Taught by Rabbi Aaron Fine with Artist Shira Moss at the JCC as part of Torah Hub

Hasidism is a form of Jewish mysticism that grew out of Kabbalah beginning in the early 1700’s.  In this course, we will explore the core concepts of early Hasidism using three learning modalities: text study in chevruta (with a study partner), discussion, and by engaging in art with the guidance of artist Shira Moss.  Our primary text will be “The Fundaments of Hasidism,” an essay by the fascinating spiritual and intellectual figure Hillel Zeitlin who died in the Shoah. We will explore core spiritual concepts such as Being and Nothingness, Tsimtsum (Divine Contraction), The Power of the Maker Within the Made, Raising Up Sparks, The Power of Letters, Raising up Distracting Thoughts, Uplifting Attributes, and Sweetening Harsh Judgments in Their Root.

Each class will include an exploration of these concepts in a personal way through the medium of art.  No prior art experience is required, only an openness to explore your inner world.

Class size may be limited, registration details coming shortly.
